Tarotoo looked at everything from haunted tours and sites to eerie cemeteries and houses across American cities. The study also analyzed how often people go online looking for haunted places, ghost stories, and other spooky experiences in these places. Each city was then given a score based on both its real-life frights and online interest.

New Orleans takes first place as America’s most haunted place. The city has 82 cemeteries with odd above-ground tombs, plus 26 sites where spirits are said to appear regularly. There are also 55 different ghost tours exploring these eerie attractions around the city. With so many supernatural encounters reported, locals and visitors show big interest in the paranormal side of New Orleans, looking up ghost-related stories on the Internet more than 350K times each month.

Chicago follows as the second most haunted place in America. The city is home to 42 cemeteries and 30 sites where apparitions have been witnessed. Thirteen ghost tours take people through these haunted spots where strange things keep happening. Residents here are quite curious about the paranormal, researching them online over 130K times a month. Chicagoans actually show the most interest in ghost stories compared to any other city in the country.

San Antonio comes in third place with spirits seemingly everywhere. The city has 145 cemeteries holding generations of the dead, plus 55 sites where people regularly report seeing ghosts and hearing strange sounds. Twenty-seven ghost tours take visitors to these locations, and with more than 220 places tied to paranormal encounters around town, ghost hunters have plenty of places to see here.

San Diego takes fourth place among the scariest cities in the US. The city has 27 cemeteries and 28 locations where unexplained phenomena occur. Savannah ranks fifth as the most haunted small city in America.
